Things To Ask an Audiologist

Before making a decision on a hearing aid do your research. Visit the informational sites of various manufacturers and dealers on the web. This site is a good place to start, but dealer and manufacturer sites will give you specifics on their models.

When visiting an audiologist, don't be afraid to ask questions. You are going to be spending a lot of money and deserve to have your questions answered.

Also, know that many audiologists will push one brand or another. This is typically because they are familiar with that model and may even have been trained by the manufacturer. A couple of audiologists I know once worked as manufacturers' reps. This doesn't make them any less effective or their advice any less qualified -- but you need to know.
That said, here are some questions for you to ask:
  • Is my situation correctable with surgery?
  • What type of aid is best for my loss?
  • What is the total cost, including maintainence and battery costs?
  • Is there a trial period when I can return it for a refund? Is there any part of the fee which is not refundable?
  • How log does the warranty last? What is covered?
  • What kind of problems can I expect with this aid?
  • What are the different manufacturers that make the type of aid that I need?
  • What kind of aid would look best for me cosmetically? Are there color options?
